Duck Sh*t Tea

50things.substack.com

I don’t know where I first heard of Duck Shit Tea but anything prefaced by “duck shit” is definitely going to get my attention. When I found out it was actually something edible and highly prized in certain areas of the world, I knew I had to add it to my list.

Many of my original 50 Things, and so far six on my new list, involved eating or drinking something. These are usually easy items to check off once I figure out where to get the item. In the case of duck shit oolong, I ended up buying it online from Three Gems Tea for $15.

To be honest, it didn’t taste very different from many other white teas that I had tried in the past so I probably won’t try it again but I love the story behind it. Duck Shit tea is an oolong tea cultivated in the Phoenix Mountain of Guangdong Province. Apparently, a farmer was trying to hide the secret to his delicious tea so he named it something disgusting and it stuck. It reminds me of when parents pretend something tastes awful so a child won’t want to eat or drink something that an adult wants to save for themself. (Maybe that’s just something that happened in my house growing up but I never really fell for it when my mother would tell me something (like an awesome-looking cocktail) tasted “yucky.”)

I have since found Duck Shit Chocolate and being the chocolate fan that I am, I got a bar from Caputos. I definitely enjoyed the chocolate more than the tea but I think I would also enjoy ANY chocolate more than ANY tea:)

Do you have any weird food or drinks on your list? Do you have any suggestions for me? I eat a lot of weird food to begin with and I’ll try almost anything (unless it’s raw meat, bloody, or alive) so finding things I haven’t already tried can be challenging. If you have a suggestion or something unusual on your list, please comment below.

Haggis. Yummmm! I know, it sounds awful but it is sausage with ground organ meat, oatmeal and spices boiled together. And, served with mashed potatoes and rich tender turnips ( and a wee dram of really good whisky) it will warm you against a wet, cold Scottish winter perfectly.
